Murder in the Amazon

Brazilian police arrested 2 suspects in the amazon murder. The only reason I’m sharing with you this news is because the victims of this horrible crime were murdered just because they tried to protect the amazon rainforest.

I found this article in the guardian.co and I knew I must make a blog post on this issue.

Ribeiro da Silva and Do Espírito Santo were often threatened with death threats because of their fight to protect the environment, and last November the former told a TEDx conference in Manaus that he expected to be killed. “I will protect the forest at all costs. That is why I could get a bullet in my head at any moment,” he said.

On May 24th  six months after this environmental conference José Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife, Maria do Espírito Santo, were killed. For more information please check the source article here.

I want to take a moment and say thank you for those brave people that were willing to sacrifice their life in order to protect the amazon rainforest. I can only wish next time the police would prevent murder such as this one before it happen.

The concept is simply brilliant - The Amazon Sustainable Foundation (FAS) add a vision – turning Google Earth “street view” into “river view” in the Amazon river. This vision is now becoming reality!

I believe This is an exciting news!  It can help raise awareness to what really is going on in the amazon rainforest and the challenges we all must face before it will be too late.

Check out what FAS project leader Gabriel Ribenboim had to say

“It is very important to show the world not only the environment and the way of life of the traditional population, but to sensitise the world to the challenges of climate change, deforestation and combating poverty.”

If you want to read more about this project and to better understand the technology behind it you should check this article.

What do you guys think about this project, Do you believe it can and will make a difference? Are we really going to use it to better understand how we can preserve the forest and help the locals at the same time? I truly hope it will. One thing for sure this project  will bring us more beautiful images from the amazing amazon rainforest and the river basin.
